Legacy Print Dialog in Win10/Win11 apps

Microsoft quietly removed the familiar legacy Print dialog and substituted a simplified dialog which removes several features. In addition, MS did not provide any easy way for programmers or end users to specify that they'd like to use the legacy Print dialog.

However, there is a way that involves editing the Registry. It must be done on a per/user basis. (If you're not comfortable modifying the Registry, best to ask someone who IS comfortable diddling with the insides of the OS to help you – or contact Telescript for support.)

In any case, start by backing up the registry. This ensures you have a copy of the working registry in case something goes awry.  Follow these steps:

  1. Press the Windows Key, type regedit, and open the Registry Editor.
  2. In the Registry Editor menu, select Export > File. Export the contents of your Registry to a flash drive, your desktop, or some other location where it can be easily found. Also provide a self-identifying name such as "2025MAY12-Laptop-10-RegBak.reg".

Now, modify the registry to allow using  the familiar Legacy Print Dialog:

  1. Press the Windows Key, type regedit, and open the Registry Editor.
  2. Navigate to this path:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Print\UnifiedPrintDialog
(If the UnifiedPrintDialog folder does not exist under Print, right-click Print, select New > Key, and name it UnifiedPrintDialog).
  3. Right-click an empty space on the right side, select New > DWORD (32-bit) Value, and name it PreferLegacyPrintDialog.
  4. Double-click the new value and change its Value data to 1.
  5. Close the editor and restart your TeleScript application if open.

You should now see the familiar legacy print dialog in your TeleScript software.
